My name is Emma (senior designer for Urban Knit). Recently, Kate and I have just returned from Porto, Portugal. An inspirational trip, where we began the design process for our AW16 range.
Urban knit teamwork in Porto meant that we were able to see all the most exciting new trends. Kate organised visits to factories and dealt with numbers/practicalities, whilst I got to work with the creative side of Urban Knit. I enjoy designing all the products you see, buy and wear especially during visits to the factories.
As a designer I love working closely with the factories, it means I can develop ideas for the new range and explore which trends are possible to produce there. During our time at the factories we looked through the new yarns and samples that related to our trend research. I love searching through the shade cards, and choosing my favorite yarns to use in the Urban Knit AW16 range.
Whilst in Porto we visited the sock factories, but also worked closely with the factories that produce our hats, scarves and gloves. These factories use luxury Italian yarns, such as Mohair and Alpaca; which make lovely, soft knitted accessories. I enjoy working with these yarns, but designing Autumn/Winter cosy knitted socks and accessories on a particularly sunny week in Portugal was really funny!
The factories are currently in the process of making our AW15 products; meaning this years A/W range has not been seen yet and I’m already on my way to thinking up the next collection. Working ahead of season means that by the time it is AW16, the range will be completed to the highest standard.
This trip to Porto was really inspirational! Travelling is an important part of a designer’s job and I enjoy soaking up the different cultures and meeting new people. On my travels I collect exciting new yarns and samples and then bring my findings back to show the rest of the Urban Knit team at HQ.
Right now I’m off to get my ideas down on paper – Watch this space for AW16 collection.
